CHOOSING YOUR GCSE SUBJECTS
You will soon be making decision about which subjects you’d like to study for GCSE. It is important that you make informed choices – you should know what’s involved in each subject and whether the subject suits you as a learner. Your choice of subjects will depend on a number of factors:
- Whether you like the subject or not – the more you enjoy a subject, the easier it is to learn
- Whether you’re already good at the subject – your March report and your teacher’s advice are useful pointers here. If you’re struggling with a subject which you can drop at the end of Key Stage 3, make sure that you fully understand what’s involved in any new subjects on offer.
- Whether you need particular subjects for your career – you will have already used your Career lessons to discuss subjects which are ESSENTIAL for some careers.
Choosing a career is a process which develops over time and involves a series of decisions as you make your way through life. Your choice of GCSE subjects should keep career choices open to you. Think ahead and choose subjects that
- Perhaps complement each other at Advanced Level
- Are needed for entry into university courses
- Are required for entry into Regional College courses (the ‘Tech’)
- May assist you in getting a job
Choose subjects which
- give you a broad and balanced curriculum and which keep as many career doors open as possible
- your teachers suggest suit your interests and abilities
Discuss your choices with parents and seek advice from those who have already studied these subjects. After all, you will be making decisions which you’ll have to live with for two years – so select wisely.
You should understand from your Employability lessons that all third level courses require passes in English and Maths at GCSE level. Many courses also require a pass in a Science subject at GCSE level. An increasing number of university courses are now also stipulating that a pass at Grade B and above is needed in some subjects.
You should spend today researching your subjects (using the Guides in this publication) and finding out from subject teachers what each subject involves in terms of:
- reading and writing requirements
- coursework components and marks available for coursework
- oral tests
- practical/fieldwork skills involved
- different tiers of entry and grades available at each tier
- modular or end of course tests
Some pupils will find that our Flexible Occupational Studies Curriculum, in conjunction with the Southern Regional College, suits their needs and aspirations. Details of the Occupational Studies course are available in this booklet.
Beidh daltaí eile ag tosú ar ábhair éagsúla trí mheán na Gaeilge ag leibhéal GCSE. Tá beartaithe againn i mbliana na hábhair seo a leanas a thairiscint (ag brath ar éileamh ar ndóigh):
- Gaeilge
- Ag Foghlaim don Saol agus don Obair
- Reiligiún (Gearrchúrsa)
- Corpoideachas
- Stair
Tá súil againn go roghnófar na hábhair seo mar tugann siad deis don fhoireann ár soláthar trí mheán na Gaeilge a fhorbairt.
It’s over to you – read this booklet thoroughly; chose carefully; ask questions if you need advice. Use the school’s Careers Officer (Mr B Devlin) or make a personal appointment with Mr Moore (Careers Department) if you need additional information. Ádh mór.
A. Moore (Careers)
